Emerson Hall and the Atwood Chemistry Center were built in 2000 and 1974, respectively, to support the Department of Chemistry and other science departments within Emory College of Arts and Sciences. The two buildings host a combined 323,262 square feet of research and teaching space. A recent (2015) addition and renovation of the Atwood Chemistry Center created a vibrant central hub – the “science commons” – for Chemistry and the surrounding science community. Cumulatively, the facility provides access to the following spaces: 1) multiple teaching laboratories; 2) eight classrooms, including a 99-person, engaged learning classroom that changes the way Chemistry teaches large enrollment classes; 3) research space necessary to accommodate approximately 30 research-active faculty members; and 4) collaborative community space anchored by two transparent meeting spaces, a coffee shop, a satellite location of the University library, and a wide variety of seating options. There are also five service cores located within the Atwood Chemistry Center and Emerson Hall: Mass Spec Center, NMR Research Center, X-ray Crystallography Center, Robert P. Apkarian Integrated Microscopy Core, and Emerson Center for Scientific Computation, which support research and teaching activities.
