Emory Behavioral Immunology Program
Last Updated: March 18, 2026

The Emory Behavioral Immunology Program (BIP) is a premiere multidisciplinary research program investigating the effects of inflammation on the brain and behavior in patients with psychiatric disorders and major medical illnesses. By integrating neuroimaging, genomics and proteomics, cellular immune assays, induced pluripotent stem cell technology, advanced psychiatric assessment methodology, and drug development approaches, the BIP and its faculty serve as a central resource for individuals interested in clinical and basic science research on immune-brain interactions at Emory. As a leader in the field of precision psychiatry, the BIP has made considerable advances in identifying and characterizing inflammatory subgroups of patients with psychiatric disorders ranging from depression and anxiety to schizophrenia. Moreover, the BIP is conducting innovative clinical trials aimed at getting the right treatment to the right patient at the right time. Ongoing studies will establish mechanisms and potential efficacy of therapies targeting inflammation, dopamine, glutamate, and immunometabolism, while identifying novel areas for future development.
