Emory Clinical Neuroscience Research Unit (ECNRU) is a research group funded by the National Institutes of Health, Veterans Administration, and Department of Defense. ECNRU investigators perform research on the brain and neurobiological correlates of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), major depression, anxiety disorders, dissociation, mild traumatic brain injury and addictions, and mechanisms of stress in cardiovascular disease. Current studies are looking at treatments with non-invasive vagus nerve stimulation and mechanisms by which they work in PTSD, mTBI, and opioid withdrawal in patients with Opioid Use Disorder (OUD). This research led to Breakthrough Treatment Designation for PTSD for this device (gammaCore)by the Food and Drug Administratoin in January of 2022. ECNRU’s mission is to understand how stress affects the brain and leads to mental disorders and addictions, affects heart disease, and ways to translate this knowledge into new treatments. Its studies have contributed to better understanding and developing treatments for neurobiological and psychological conditions, including PTSD, Opioid Use Disorders (OUDs), co-morbid Mild Traumatic Brain Injury (mTBI), and heart disease.
